1964 Insider – Nekwaya

LOCATION: NEW YORK, USA

What is your name and what do you do?

My name is Nekwaya and I work full – time as a foreign service officer, currently stationed in New York, USA, and a part-time blogger and content creator at nekiinthecity.com

How do you relax and unwind after a long day?

I come up with content concepts and ideas, and just have that moment of creativity, although sometimes some music, snacks and a good show get the job done just as well.

When are you most inspired?

Inspiration comes to me in my moments of quiet, when my mind gets to run free.

What will you say is your biggest achievement in your career?

I think my entire career has been an achievement. I took a longer route into diplomacy but I have definitely found myself in a really great place where I get to meet, engage and work with people from all over the world, including his-profile personalities.

What does self care mean to you?

Self-care to me is understanding what you need at any given moment and then allowing yourself the freedom and space to have that without any guilt… so it could be a moment of quiet, a spa day, a good bathroom cry.

What is your favorite time of day?

Definitely morning!

Honestly this is one of those pieces of advise that some may see as harsh or bordering on insensitive but at its core it’s a reminder that we all have capacity to dream and to whatever we put our minds to, and for me personally has been my reminder to always dream, and to not let insurmountable circumstances kill my dreams.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

“If they can do it, why can’t you”

Honestly this is one of those pieces of advise that some may see as harsh or bordering on insensitive but at its core it’s a reminder that we all have capacity to dream and to whatever we put our minds to, and for me personally has been my reminder to always dream, and to not let insurmountable circumstances kill my dreams.

Tell us what book(s) you’re currently reading

I’m currently reading The Power of Women by Dr. Denis Mukwege

Whats your favorite thing about 1964 ?

For me, the fact that the brand perfectly tells the story of a new Africa, not confined to a narrative of what “African fashion and brands” look like but what the reality of Africa today is… multifaceted, dynamic, innovative.

What makes you feel accomplished?

Seeing and feeling my friends and family in happy, healthy places.

What song best describes you?

I don’t know that there is one single song that describes me… it would probably have to be a mashup of like a couple of different songs across various genres but it would definitely include a couple of Beyoncé songs, Lady Antebellum, Amanda Black, Sauti Sol and Geoffrey Oryema songs.
